Satire joviale des mœurs de la haute société, The Smiling Lieutenant, qui a toute l'élégance et la sophistication des films de Lubitsch, est pourtant loin de tutoyer le génie de Haute pègre, opus tourné l'année suivante. La faute en revenant principalement à l'abattage de Maurice Chevalier. Sa bonhommie et son accent français à couper au couteau apparaissent d'abord comme une amusante fantaisie pour s'imposer progressivement en une rengaine fatigante. Sympathique mais mineur.
